In August 2009 Liberal Democrat Councillors met with senior Council officers concerning the Planning and Development Control department. The Lib Dems submitted evidence that the department was failing to do its job properly resulting in poor decisions and appalling customer care that was badly affecting both residents and Spelthorne's environment.
Every year at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) Spelthorne Borough Council elects the Chairman and Vice-Chairman for the various Committees. This year was different.

This is the third election in a row in which Lib Dems have made substantial progress - the national election in 2010, the county elections in 2009 and the borough elections in 2007 - a pattern that we intend to continue.
Vince Cable took time out of his busy national schedule to visit Spelthorne and to canvass on behalf on Mark Chapman. An enthusiastic group of canvassers got a very positive response from local people and confirmed that more and more people are switching to the Liberal Democrats at this election.
"This is not the time for banks to be complaining about tighter regulatory controls, it is the time for them to be lending to good British businesses," said the Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor.
The two planning applications from London Irish, to build 194 houses in the Avenue in Sunbury and to redevelop the Hazelwood golf course site as a rugby centre, were both refused unanimously by Spelthorne's Planning Committee.
